We often get asked, “How long does a garage door last?” There are many factors that determine how long a garage door will last. In this post we will look at some of these.
If you’re taking good care of the garage door, it can often last for 20-25 years in general. There are several factors that can influence the life-span of your garage door.
These include:
-The products used to make the door.
-The quality of the moving parts, such as springs and the rollers.
-How often the door is used.
-Whether or not you schedule regular maintenance of the door.
How Often the Door is Used
The torsion spring will have a lifespan that is approximately 10,000 cycles.
If you just open/close the garage door twice a day, the spring can last 12 to 14 years. If you open and close the garage door more often than that, the lifespan of the spring will be less.
Likewise, your garage door life-span relies on the life-span of the components that make it up. If you’re taking care of them all, then the garage door itself will last longer.
Should You Replace Your Garage Door?
Even if you’re taking good care of your garage door, it cannot last forever. At some point, it will need to be replaced. When might you need to change it?
If the garage door is 25 years or older and you are experiencing issues with it, replacing it would likely be more economical in the long run.
Is the Garage Door in Good Condition?
Some feel that they’ll be saving cash when they make repair services to an older door, but the reality is you’ll be investing extra on the door, in the future, to keep it operational. By replacing it there will be a larger expense at first, but longterm it will be a good investment.
Thinking of Selling Your Home?
If you are thinking about selling your home, a new garage door can increase curb appeal and increase the overall worth of your home. If you are planning on selling your home, it might be worthwhile to update the house with a new garage door.
